Propeller ![]() |
The first powered aircraft used the propeller as the device which translated power (developed by an internal combustion engine) into thrust. Propeller driven aircraft are restricted to subsonic flight. |
Jet engine![]() |
To achieve higher altitudes and supersonic speeds the jet engine is required. The jet engine is an extremely complex device but can achieve high thrust at high altitudes, where the thin atmosphere makes propellers inefficient and forces internal combustion engines to require superchargers. |
Rocket engine![]() |
For huge thrust, the rocket engine excels. It is also the only engine that can function in space. Note however, that in space, there is NO LIFT or DRAG ! The space shuttle is both a space-ship and an aircraft. In its aircraft mode however, it is really just a glider which is capable of descent only. Unlike conventional winged aircraft, the shuttle uses rocket thrust to provide the LIFT needed to achieve orbit.
