Forms of Energy

Kinetic Energy

Kinetic Energy

Objects which are moving possess energy by virtue of their mass and their speed. This property is called kinetic energy.

One can easily calculate the kinetic energy Ek of an object using the relation

Ek = 1/2mv2

where m is its mass and v is its speed.

When the mass is in kilograms(kg), and the speed is in metres per second (m/s), the energy is in joules (J).

It is possible to extract energy from a body having kinetic energy and to use the extracted energy to do useful work or to produce heat.

Potential Energy

Potential Energy
Transparency Master
Energy of a body or a substance which is due to forces within the internal structure of the substance, (such as chemical bond forces), or energy which is a result of forces within a field, (such as a gravitational field), is called potential energy.

TNT is a substance with a lot of potential energy - energy which can be released explosively.

Gasoline, wood, propane, voltaic cells, (in batteries), sugar, (in food), and candle wax are all examples of things that have potential energy. In these instances it is chemical potential energy.

Water at the top of a dam, the raised weights in a pendulum clock, and a snow boarder at the top of a mountain are all examples of things that also have potential energy. In this case it is called gravitational potential energy.

It is possible to extract energy from a body having potential energy and to use the extracted energy to do useful work or to produce heat.
