Aerial view of the flight path the research team took on the helicopter. Note that McMurdo Sound is frozen over and the sea ice edge (where the ice is broken apart) is approximately 40 km north of the Cape Bird (northern tip of Ross Island). The yellow square (B0-018) is where the research fish hut is located; on the western side of Tent Island.
The whole helicopter trip took 90 minutes. |
Rebecca and Tom in the helicopter prior to lift-off. Cool helmets-check, GPS units-check, cameras-check.

Spotting seals in the helicopter was very difficult. As you can see here from this picture that Steve took, the seal (indicated by the arrow) is a small black dot beside the large ice crack.

Icebergs in Wohlschlag Bay. These icebergs are frozen in place. These were quite large in size (200m long by 50m wide and about 2-3 stories high). Seals are often located around these structures due to the increase in cracks in those areas.

Dellbridge Islands (Tent, Inaccessible, Big Razorback and Little Razorback Islands). The red circle indicates where we have placed our mobile work centre (fish hut); just west of Tent Island.

Seals resting near the Erebus glacial tongue. Notice the pressure ridge that is formed by the glacier meeting the sea ice.

McMurdo Station from the helicopter. The tan coloured building in the center is Crary lab building (arrow). This is where our lab is located. The small arrow is our sleeping quarters.
