Navigating the Polar Science 2006 Web Site: Explore the Communication Tools

Polar Science isn't a typical web site; it's more of a collaborative learning environment. We've built a space where students, teachers and mentors can communicate with each other to perform specific tasks in order to conduct research, solve problems or create products.

We've tried to both maximize and focus communication opportunities:

  • each team has a web page (to post information about their class and school);
  • each user has a web page (to post personal information);
  • each user and team has an e-mail account to contact other participating classes and the Polar Science Teams;
  • each Area of Focus has a shared discussion forum in the Messages Area to ask questions and share ideas;
  • participants may post to all shared discussion forums or they may send private messages to other teams;
  • all participants have a Blog to share personal reflections as they work through the research and investigations. The Ice and Lab Teams will be using the Polar Science Blog to communicate with each other while sharing data from Antarctica. Students should use their own Blogs as an online learning log.

Focus areas and blogs are visible to the public at large, i.e. anyone visiting the web site whether they are registered or not. Message areas are only visible to registered participants after they have logged on.
