Snow falls in Greenland every month of the year. Since the temperature of the inland ice mass averages only -10 degrees Celsius even in July, very little is lost by melting. Instead, the snow continues to accumulate, gradually compressing into ice. Laurie can expect inland temperatures on the ice cap to be as low as -30 to -40 degrees Celsius. Laurie and his companions will travel by ski pulling sleds containing their gear, using wind assistance with parasails when appropriate.
Read about the climate in Greenland at http://www.greenland-guide.dk/gt/visit/green-01.htm#climate Check the forecast at http://www.dmi.dk/vejr/observationer/obsdata_gl.html. It's not in English but easy to understand. |
