Weather/Climate/Temperature Snow falls in Greenland every month of the year. Since the temperature of the inland ice mass averages only -10 degrees Celsius even in July, very little is lost by melting. Instead, the snow continues to accumulate, gradually compressing into ice. Laurie can expect inland temperatures on the ice cap to be as low as -30 to -40 degrees celsius. Laurie and his companions will travel by ski pulling sleds containing their gear. If the weather permits, Laurie and his team mates will be using sails to help harness the energy of the wind and make their travelling easier. Air and Water in the Environment, Grade 2

Daily Activity: Laurie and team will be exercising very hard in difficult conditions (cold, wind, increasing altitude). Have students examinine the effects of exercise on their breathing rate and discuss the training and conditioning necessary for such an arduous journey.
