Weather/Climate/Temperature

Snow falls in Greenland every month of the year. Since the temperature of the inland ice mass averages only -10 degrees Celsius even in July, very little is lost by melting. Instead, the snow continues to accumulate, gradually compressing into ice. Laurie can expect inland temperatures on the ice cap to be as low as -30 to -40 degrees celsius. Laurie and his companions will travel by ski pulling sleds containing their gear. If the weather permits, Laurie and his team mates will be using sails to help harness the energy of the wind and make their travelling easier.

Read about the climate in Greenland at http://www.greenland-guide.dk/gt/visit/green-01.htm#climate

Check the forecast at http://www.dmi.dk/vejr/observationer/obsdata_gl.html. It's not in English but easy to understand.

Air and Water in the Environment, Grade 2

Daily Activity: Laurie and team will be exercising very hard in difficult conditions (cold, wind, increasing altitude). Have students examinine the effects of exercise on their breathing rate and discuss the training and conditioning necessary for such an arduous journey.

Classroom Resources: The YES I Can! Science database contains curriculum-linked science resources for teachers. Grade 2 teachers will find the following resources to use when following this expedition.

Database powered by GTA's Curriculum DataEngine(tm)

Be sure to note the curriculum expectations for each resource. After the expedition is over, explore the other subjects/strands in the YES I Can! Science database for many more activities linked to the science expectations for your grade level!
