Grade Four Summary

Surviving on Mars will be a daunting task. It is unlikely that the first explorers to reach Mars will be able to transport all their necessary food, water, oxygen and other supplies with them.

Because they will have to stay on Mars for at least one and one-half years before they can return, it has been proposed that they grow food, probably hardy vegatables, in small isolated garden habitats on the Martian surface.

These gardens will need to be fully enclosed and pressurized in order for the plants to geminate and survive.

Not only will the correct choice of plants be important, but efficient recycling will also be needed for such a project to be successful.
