How to Use The Ozone Over the Canadian Arctic Curriculum Guide

This guide consists of:

  • printable teacher reference pages with explanatory notes,
  • transparency masters for overhead projectors,
  • student activity pages for data analysis.

It is intended to be used in conjunction with the expedition data either as a real-time or archived event.

Preparing to use these resources

Experience has shown that the best way to use these resources is to:

  1. Begin by printing out the entire guide. Transparency masters can be printed directly onto colour (or grayscale) transparencies, or printed on ordinary paper and then photocopied onto transparencies.
Hint: Grayscale transparencies are helpful as they can be highlighted with colour markers when you are discussing them in class.
  2. Read over the material. Make margin notes for yourself, so that you can easily align the information to your student's backgrounds, interests and abilities.
  3. Print or photocopy the transparency masters and data collection copy masters you wish to give students for reference, so that they may be handed out to your class at the appropriate time.

Suggested procedure for using guide in conjunction with expedition

  1. Divide the class into pairs and create a timetable so that each pair has a date to access the YES I Can! Ozone Expedition site to gather information for the class.
  2. Have "information gatherers" make note of weather conditions and expedition reports and print out the daily ozone map, (to be used at the end of the expedition for data analysis).
  3. Ask information gatherers to prepare a report to present to the class. Reports may be added each day to an expedition bulletin board.
  4. Have students research Auyuittuq National Park from their web site:
    http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/parks/Nunavut/Auyuittuq/auyuittuq_e.htm
  5. Present and discuss each of the topics from the Curriculum Guide in teacher-directed lessons.
  6. Have "information gatherers" collect expedition data when it is available.
  7. Analyse expedition data.

Note: The expedition web site and all data collected will remain as an archived event on the YES I Can! web site so it may be used at any time.
