Diane's note: pretty good transmission today
We covered 22.5 kms. and we're at an altitude of about 7700 ft. This was our single best day in terms of hauling. It started out as an absolutely glorious day, almost clear skies, sunshine and the great circular plane of snow that marked our descent as we travelled.
In the middle of the afternoon clouds started coming in low down and bringing with them poor visibility, not quite whiteout conditions, and nowhere as bad as it has been, but not great just the same.It started to snow which is the last thing we want at this stage.
The surface in the early part of the day was crisp and almost ideal for travelling so we made good time at the beginning. But even though it was snowing only slightly, the very fine crystals were building up as powder in all the hollows, cracks and spaces. It was still a good surface. You could certainly feel the little tugs and pulls of the sled every time you hit one of those patches. You'd be pulling along nice and smooth, easy with no effort, then the powder just seemed to grip the runners. It was still a pretty good surface though. It's still snowing now, almost like sand coming off the side of the tent.
It was still a pretty good day. The wind was at our sides most of the time so we weren't able to use the sails. It wasn't a strong wind, but just enough to make it cool, so we had to had to be pretty thoroughly dressed. Especially in the end, it was getting quite cool and nasty.
We're making good progress...
End of transmission
