Diane's note: based on the information we found on the Greenland DEW sites at:
we had identified the DEW line site in Laurie's path as
DYE III. It would appear that that information is incorrect and
that the expedition team visited DYE II.
We got off to a good start today and just after noon we were at DYE II. There was a hut quite close by that two people used for part of the summer at least. There were weather instruments etc. there, but they were not there when we arrived.
We had a very brief visit into the station itself. It was totally dark except for the few small areas where there were windows but we didn't spend very long there. We did spend quite a bit of time getting photographs and looking around in general, then we set a new heading for our final destination.
The surface was very good today, warm, not particularly because it was warm outside, but because it was flat calm and sunny. We actually made incredibly good progress, recognizing that from our camp this morning and to DYE II and then to our current heading was quite a number of degrees distant. We're 22.8 kms from our previous camp site, but if you add up the actual distance to DYE II and then from there to our present position, it's about 24.7 kms. We made good time taking into consideration the two or three hours we spent in the vicinity of DYE II.
We're definitely feeling like we're going downhill now. At times we're getting some advantage to the slope. You can't see it. It's actually only about 15-20 feet per kilometre, so it's not a slope you can see, but it's definitely helping, especially as our loads get lighter. We're feeling, as we have been all the way through, pretty optimistic. We're looking forward to a few good hard days to bring us to the end. We're also of course hoping to get sailing. That would actually put us a day or two ahead and that would be wonderful.
End of transmission
